The key to humor in a sales presentation is relaxation. If everyone is relaxed then the humor will be accepted. If you have to try the joke out first, it is not spontaneous. Humor is all about spontaneity. Don't tell jokes, tell stories. Too much humor is abrasive and is actually a sign of weakness. Humor can give you the edge you are looking for if the atmosphere is relaxed enough to deliver it effectively.
